In order to connect with a city, neighborhood or social issue, it is important to understand the context, culture and history related to a volunteer experience.

SaLT has partnered with locally-based nonprofit organizations to ensure the following educational experiences:

  • Local experts and leaders to speak on relevant issues
  • Historians and tour guides to discuss the neighborhoods within we serve
  • Facilitate dialogue with community members
  • Organize tours of local cultural institutions, museums and historical landmarks

Students will participate in Daily Personal Reflection through Journaling

Daily Personal Reflection is vital to the success of Service-Learning. Reflection is a process of examining and interpreting personal experiences to gain new understandings. Students will participate in daily journal writing to support their personal learning and growth.

The Benefits of Daily Personal Reflection:

Reflection is integral to the Service-Learning experience as it:

  • Transforms experience into genuine learning
  • Challenges students to develop higher-level thinking and problem solving
  • Works against the perpetuation of stereotypes
  • Fosters a sense of connection and a deeper awareness of community needs
  • Increases the likelihood that students will remain committed to service

Quality Daily Personal Reflection occurs when students are:

  • Scheduled for regular opportunities for guided and purposeful reflection
  • Engaged in both group and individual reflection activities
  • Challenged to assess their current knowledge, values, and skills
  • Responding with interpretation, awareness, and a commitment for action
  • Skilled in the practices of active listening and observing
